Title: Self-Determination as We Age, and Indigenous Ways of Knowing

Speaker: Evan Adams, MD

Chief Medical Officer for the First Nations Health Authority

Summary: Self determination – the right of the individual to determine their own course without interference from other individuals - is often seen as a political stance, not a personal one. However, aging populations can learn from First Nations communities about flexing their right to live as they choose. The First Nations Health Authority in BC is a health authority for First Nations people by First Nations people. At its most basic, it demonstrates the right of people to shape their own health system & look after themselves. Aging adults, like First Nations, can & should, ask for - even demand - an effective, responsive governance and actions ensuring their health & well-being.

Bio: Dr. Evan Adams is of Tla’amin First Nation ancestry. In his role as CMO, Dr. Adams provides invaluable leadership representing the FNHA as he works closely with government partners on population and public health matters that affect First Nations and all British Columbians.

Dr. Adams leads a team of FNHA physicians—health and wellness partners to BC First Nations—who focus on First Nations health and wellness with a population health approach with the aim of creating a unique health care model that will be the first of its kind in Canada. He contributes to the continued transformation of health care and responds to the wellness directives provided by First Nations communities.
